We passed out Note Cards in Second Life that summarized this Wiki. The contents are available here for those unable to attend.
Adult Learning Assumptions
- The Learner’s Need to Know
- Adult learners need to know why something is important and how it applies to their work or their lives. The challenge is to create a sense of immediacy and context with the learning activities.
- The Learner’s Self-Concept
- Adult learners need to be seen as (or guided into the role of) self-directed learners. They need to have autonomy over their learning experience.
- The Role of the Learner’s Experience
- Adult's often have a history and diversity of life experience they bring to the learning process. This past experience needs to be recognized and integrated into the new learning.
- A Student’s Readiness to Learn
- Adult learning needs to show an immediate connection with and relation to real life. Learners need to understand how the learning applies to their context.
- The Student’s Orientation to Learning
- Adults view new learning as tools to help in the problem solving process. They need to be able to transform ideas into applications.
- Students’ Motivation to Learn
- Adult learners might have external motivation but internal drive to learn will lead to a higher level of ownership of the process.
- Quantum Systems
- There are complicated relationships that exist between ideas and people. For ideas we need to recognize how these concepts relate and help learners make meaning of more complicated systems. Understanding the relationships among people is just as important. Each person carries their own knowledge sets, perspectives, and experiences that they can then contribute to the greater learning process.
List of Technologies for Communication

Tasks for Breakout Groups
The Challenge
Your university has created a mandate to develop technological solution that would better integrate adult learners into courses. As a pilot program, a group of the highest demand courses have been chosen for adaption. These courses can take the form of traditional classes with a technology supplement or entirely online courses. The challenge is to chose the most effective technologies to represent the needs of adult learners.
Apparel Studio 1: Assembly and Fit
Understand the processes within the product development model, focusing on the prototype construction process. Understand techniques in assembling garments: shaping, joining and styling details for apparel products.
